"Ghau" is a transliteration from Tibetan, referring to a protective amulet box.
Many assume that ghau boxes, being amulet holders, exclusively contain Buddha statues. However, this is not always the case. While they may hold Buddha images, they more commonly contain silk scrolls inscribed with scriptures, relics, or medicinal pills blessed by high monks. Some ghau boxes also hold sacred items like the hair or fragments of clothing from living Buddhas.
