Tenmoku glaze is a glaze that originated in the Song Dynasty of China (960-1279) and was mainly used in the production of ceramic tea bowls. Tianmu glaze has deep and changeable colors, and its name comes from the Tianmu kiln in Tianmu Mountain, Fujian Province, China. The main features of Tianmu glaze are as follows:
Rich colors: The colors of Tianmu glaze vary, including dark black, brown, gold and blue. These colors are formed due to chemical reactions of metal oxides in the glaze at high temperatures.
Glaze texture: The glaze of Tianmu glaze is usually very smooth and has a certain thickness. The crystals in the glaze layer will form unique patterns and spots during the firing process, giving each piece of Tenmoku glaze porcelain a unique visual effect.
Kiln transformation effect: Tianmu glaze is prone to kiln transformation during the firing process, that is, the glaze surface produces different colors and textures due to changes in temperature and atmosphere during firing in the kiln. This unpredictable kiln transformation makes each piece of Tenmoku glaze porcelain unique.
Production technology: The production process of Tianmu glaze is complex and requires precise temperature control and rich production experience. Since defects are prone to occur during the firing of Tenmoku glaze, successful works are highly collectible.
Tianmu glaze was introduced to Japan in the Song Dynasty and has been carried forward in Japan. In the Japanese tea ceremony, the Tenmoku tea bowl is regarded as a precious utensil. In modern times, Tianmu glaze is still favored by ceramic enthusiasts and artists, and is widely used in the production of various ceramic vessels.
The charm of Tianmu glaze lies in its deep color and unique texture. Each work is full of changes and surprises, making it a pearl in ceramic art.
