Among the many types of cacti, this one is known for being exceptionally easy to care for, and you can often find it growing in homes all over Taiwan. Commonly referred to as "Bagua Red" or "Bagua Huang," this cactus is a spherical variety known as *Echinopsis eyriesii*. Cacti in the *Echinopsis* genus (also known as sea urchin ball cactus) have spines that, like their genus name prefix *echino-* (meaning porcupine), are long and dense, resembling a porcupine's quills. The suffix *-opsis* means appearance, suggesting that cacti in this genus resemble a ball of porcupines. Thus, most cacti in this genus are round or spherical, with areoles arranged on longitudinal ribs. The flowers of this genus are also quite large, with a long, tubular base that often exceeds 20 cm. The outer surface of the tubular base is covered with tufts of fine, dark hairs. If they bloom at night, the flowers are typically white and emit a subtle fragrance. "Bagua Red" is a perennial evergreen succulent herb. Its stem is spherical or oval, fleshy green, and can reach over 10 cm in diameter. It has 12 to 14 longitudinal ribs, with clusters of spines on each rib, usually about 10 per cluster, varying in length and radiating outwards. The spines are light brown or yellowish-brown, with darker tips. The leaves are small, growing within the spine clusters, and fall off early. Flowers emerge from the spine clusters on the longitudinal ribs and bloom at night. They are white, pale purplish-white, or pale reddish-white, similar in shape to a night-blooming cereus, with a long, funnel-shaped or tubular base that can exceed 20 cm. The outside of the funnel shape is covered with scales, with long hairs in the axils of the scales. The calyx and petals are indistinct. The fruit is a spherical berry, spineless, with numerous small seeds. Propagation by division or offsets has a high success rate! 【Care Instructions】 Cacti are generally very drought-tolerant and sun-loving, capable of surviving for 1-2 months without water. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Therefore, use a loose, well-draining soil mix. A recommended ratio is 'Granular Soil: Potting Soil = 7:3'. Watering: Water approximately every 10-14 days. Sunlight: Full sun or partial sun. Even with insufficient light indoors, they can survive due to their strong vitality, but they may not grow attractively and can become leggy.
