Introduction to Kutani-yaki
Kutani-yaki, a dazzling gem of Japanese painted ceramics
This embodies traditional Japanese painted ceramics, originating from the Minami-Kaga region in southern Ishikawa Prefecture.
It is considered the pinnacle of painted ceramics for its exquisite craftsmanship and vibrant colors.
With a history spanning over 360 years, Kutani-yaki has become one of Japan's most iconic porcelain crafts.
Not only is it renowned for its vibrant colors, but also for its innovative spirit that keeps pace with the times.
It is beloved by enthusiasts throughout Japan and around the world. Kutani-yaki takes its name from Kutani Village in Enuma District, Kaga Province (near present-day Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture).
Its origins can be traced back to the early Edo period, when porcelain production began in Kutani Village, nestled deep within the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
Kutani ware utilizes its unique "Kutani Five Colors"—five Japanese hard-color pigments of green, yellow, red, purple, and indigo—using "upei-e" (a technique of painting patterns onto the glaze), resulting in vibrant, richly layered visuals.
This has become one of its most distinctive features. Over time, Kutani ware has continuously innovated, blending traditional and modern designs.
While retaining its classic five-color style, it actively engages with contemporary pop culture.
