▰▰▰▰▰▰DETAIL▰▰▰▰▰▰
This is a rare full-motif plate-style piece, a bracelet intricately assembled with numerous Japanese damascene motifs. Its creation represents a significant undertaking. Featuring scenes of Mount Fuji, camellia flowers, butterflies, bamboo forests, and flying cranes, a single bracelet tells countless stories of Japan's landscapes.
▰▰▰▰▰▰AMITA▰▰▰▰▰▰
Founded in Kobe in 1932, Amita re-established its Damascene factory in Kyoto in 1946 after World War II. In 1952, the Japanese government officially designated Amita Damascene Co., Ltd. as an export retailer (duty-free shop). The company produced many items for export to the West, allowing the curator to acquire some Japanese pieces from Western collections.
The art of metal inlay can be traced back over 2000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria. It later entered the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century with the Moorish invasion. During the same period, it also made its way to Japan via the Silk Road.
The process involves using iron or a copper alloy as the base, into which fine lines are incised. Thin sheets of pure gold and silver are then cut into patterns and hammered into these lines. A lacquer firing process is applied to prevent oxidation and rust of the base metal, followed by polishing. Finally, intricate micro-engraving techniques are used before the piece is set into jewelry.
