Lieutenant Colonel Robert Beatty (1789 ~ 1848), the author of the book "German Landscape", was better known to the world at the time for his Battle of Waterloo. In 1815, at the age of 26, he had been in the Grenadier Guards of the British Army for many years. Although he was injured in the Battle of Waterloo, he also recorded the battle with a series of letters, which were later published with illustrations, telling He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (Fellowship of the Royal Society) in 1822 due to his combat experience.
After the fall of Napoleon, the situation in Europe eased. The original British blockade of the European continent ended, and the British were free to travel to Europe. Robert Beatty also took advantage of this period of peace and set foot on the European continent many times. As an amateur artist, he left behind many images of European landscapes. 【German Landscape】is one of this series of travel works, recording his travels in southeast Germany and Austria. In addition to the illustrated title page, the book has a total of 61 steel plate illustrations, explaining the scenes in the images in English and French respectively. [German Landscape] is not only one of the early works of Robert Beatty's travel images, but also the steel plate technique used in it is also the early crystallization of this technique in book illustrations. At the same time, Robert Beatty also set off a new wave of travel book publishing peaks through his own travel notes. Until the middle of the nineteenth century, similar books were published all over Europe, and they were all accompanied by exquisite illustrations of different prints.
Robert Beatty's series of travel illustration books also includes "French Scenery" (French Scenery) in 1822, "Welsh Scenery" (Welsh Scenery) in 1823, and "Rhine River, Belgian and Dutch Landscape" in 1826. ] (Scenery of the Rhine, Belgium, and Holland), [Hanoverian, Saxon, and Danish Scenery] in 1828, and [Select Views of the principal cities in Europe] in 1832 Cities of Europe). He took advantage of these travels to paint landscapes and regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts.
In addition, it is worth mentioning that he expresses his gratitude to his father-in-law John Barrow (John Barrow, 1764 ~ 1848) on the dedication page of "German Landscape". Bello was Secretary-General of the Royal Navy at the time, and in 1821, Bello married his daughter. This Bello used to be the mathematics teacher of the son of the British explorer George Staunton (Sir George Leonard Staunton, 1737-1801), so in 1793, Staunton became the deputy envoy of the British Mission to China (the envoy was George Leonard Staunton) Macartney), recommended Bello as Macartney's treasurer. Stangton's record of his visit to China at that time (An Authentic Account of and Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China) contains many precious documents about China compiled by Bello. The book looks at the prosperity of Qianlong from the perspective of Westerners, and has become an important historical material for studying the history of the mid-Qing Dynasty.
