He served in the imperial painting academy during the Xianfeng era (mid-19th century). He excelled at portraiture, and was also skilled in painting flowers, birds, and landscapes. His reputation as an artist was very high, and Empress Dowager Cixi once bestowed upon him a plaque inscribed with "Master of Lifelike Portrayals." This particular painting is one from the "Twelve Flower Deities" series. Executed in color, it depicts a peony and a rooted orchid, both emerging diagonally from the left edge of the frame and dancing in the wind.
