Kawazu-zakura, the earliest blooming cherry blossom variety in Japan for the New Year. It is a natural hybrid of the Oshima cherry and the Kanzan cherry. In Taiwan, the peak blooming season is typically in mid-February. It begins with pale pink buds and opens into single-petaled blossoms ranging from deep red to vibrant crimson. The petal color is slightly deeper than that of the Somei Yoshino cherry, with a blossom diameter of approximately 3.5 cm. The blooming period for viewing is from late February to early March. Kawazu-zakura blooms for a longer duration than other varieties. This 5-year-old grafted plant from Taiwan exhibits growth comparable to the 'Kan-zakura' (Winter Cherry). It is a robust tree, known in Japan, much like the Oshima cherry, for its use as windbreak trees. The thickest part of the trunk measures 1 cm, with the rootstock measuring 1.9 cm. A graft is considered complete when the scion covers the graft union, signifying it is from the original plant. Five years of cultivation have shaped this specimen into a desirable tree form, standing at a modest height of 22 cm. Through repeated styling, the trunk exhibits a gracefully coiled and softened appearance. The main branches are well-positioned, with their extension angles carefully adjusted. This artistic cultivation requires a step-by-step approach. In conjunction with branch selection and pruning, achieving the ideal tree form is an ongoing process, not a one-time endeavor.
