Japanese Kawazu-zakura | Blooming Cherry Blossom Bonsai

Kawazu-zakura, Japan's earliest blooming cherry blossom variety in the New Year. It is a natural hybrid of Oshima cherry and Kanhi cherry. In Taiwan, the peak blooming season is usually in mid-February. The flowers start as a pale pink and deepen to a rich red when in full bloom, with single petals. The petal color is slightly deeper than that of Yoshino cherry, with a bloom diameter of about 3.5 cm. The blooming period for viewing is from late February to early March. Kawazu-zakura blooms for a longer period than other varieties. This 5-year-old grafted tree is cultivated in Taiwan and its vigor is comparable to 'Kanzakura' (Winter Cherry). It is a strong-growing tree, and in Japan, like Oshima cherry, it is used as a windbreak tree. The thickest part of the trunk measures 1 cm, and the rootstock diameter is 1.9 cm. It is considered a true specimen tree once the scion covers the graft union. Five years of cultivation have shaped its distinctive form. The tree stands at a modest height of just 22 cm. Through repeated styling, the main trunk has developed graceful curves and acclimatized. The primary branches are well-positioned, and their angles have been adjusted. This meticulous shaping requires a step-by-step approach. Combining the placement of branches with pruning, the creation of such a refined tree form cannot be achieved all at once.
