Red Bricks and White Stones
In Taiwan, as early as the late 18th century, the Dutch Eastern Indian Company introduced the buying technique of red bricks. At that time, red bricks were mostly used in the construction of buildings. I
t was not until the beginning of the 19th century, with the arrival of the Japanese Occupation Era, that Taiwan's "Red Brick Era" really emerged. Japanese architects who returned from studying in the UK combined red bricks and white stones to build new-age buildings in Taiwan that mixed Asian and European aesthetics.
The representation of these buildings include Taipei Main Station, Tainan Post Office and Ximen Red House.
Today, with the changes of the times, red bricks have gradually faded out of our sight, and are more replaced by the gray of reinforced concrete. But Time Capsule General Store kept the elements of red bricks in various designs, allowing them to exist and shine in every people’s life again.
