West Indian Cherry (Malpighia emarginata DC.) Evergreen plant, blooms almost year-round. Mature leaves are yellowish-green, making it hard to miss in the nursery. Crimson cymose inflorescences with yellow anthers are striking when in bloom. Watering should avoid the flowers; it is self-pollinating. An 18-year-old cherry tree with a 3.4 cm trunk featuring rugged bark. Trees that frequently bloom and fruit can experience stunted growth, making the creation of a well-developed canopy seem like a distant prospect. The current designer has cultivated its branches for 5 years, achieving the appearance of an old tree with a compact form but substantial presence. Continuous pruning is still necessary to encourage ramification.
