Unearthed from a collapsed pagoda in Mandalay, this Burmese Lersi Pupuong.
Estimated to be from the 15th century, it is likely over 500 years old...
These small-sized Buddha statues,
though unassuming, are exceptionally ancient.
Religious artifacts inherently possess blessings and a special energy field.
Placing it in your home or car... makes for a powerful protective amulet against evil.
******************************
The Pupuong in this listing has undergone simple cleaning,
removing hardened, caked-on earth while preserving its patina.
It is made of a very unique metal alloy,
primarily composed of silver and tin,
with additions of copper, lead, iron... and other metals.
It feels remarkably heavy in the hand. Such ancient statues
often contain sacred relics within... and sometimes, you can hear them rattle when shaken.
However, in most cases... you cannot hear anything.
Due to its resemblance to the Buddha,
many mistake it for a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha.
Upon closer inspection, the figure is depicted with a beard, hands resting on the knees. This posture,
in Tibet, is a distinctive representation of accomplished masters (like those of the Karmapa lineage).
In Thailand, this hand gesture and posture can be seen in Lersi protectors (such as the Tiger-headed Lersi)...
Furthermore, the right hand holds what appears to be prayer beads (resembling medicinal pills), and the left hand seems to be holding a scripture.
Therefore, it can be identified as an extremely rare Burmese Lersi Pupuong.
Based on information found online... among foreign collectors in countries like
England, France, and Belgium, the most common Burmese artifacts are various Buddha statues, donor figures, opium weights... and wooden beads...
Old Pupuong statues are rarely encountered... and ones with the 'Daruong' inscription are even rarer.
Moreover, Burmese customs regulations prohibit the export of antique artifacts.
Currently, antique dealers in Taiwan can still bring them back through special channels.
Considering how many can be brought back to Taiwan... it truly depends on luck and the prevailing situation...
