Why a piggy bank, and not a cow, chick, or other animal bank?
The history of the piggy bank is said to originate from the medieval European "Pygg bank." In those times, people used an orange clay called "Pygg" to craft earthenware jars for saving money. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, a craftsman received an order for a "Pygg bank." The pronunciation was the same as "Pig bank," but he mistakenly believed Pygg referred to the animal. Thus, he created a pig-shaped coin bank. To his surprise, the cute design was immensely popular, attracting many buyers.
