"The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is a famous woodblock print by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. It was published in 1832 and is one of the works in the "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" series. It depicts huge waves threatening ships in Kanagawa Oki (off the coast of Kanagawa), and like other works in the series, has Mount Fuji as its backdrop.
The picture depicts the huge waves rolling up the fishing boat, and the image of the boatmen struggling for life. The distant view is Mount Fuji. This work is Hokusai's most famous work and one of the most famous Japanese art works in the world. Also known as "Kanagawa Okinawa".
