◎Coconut, also known as "Yá," refers to the part of the coconut that connects it to the tree. Each coconut has only one stem, and from one stem, only about 1-2 coconut beads can be produced. Buddhist prayer beads made from coconut shells have a history dating back to the Tang and Song dynasties, with documented evidence in the Qing dynasty. They have long been favored in Tibetan and Han Buddhism. In the Qing dynasty, they were referred to as "Mù yá," "Yē dì," and "Mǎn guàn."
As coconut palm stems and shells are used, they develop a lustrous, darker patina and are resistant to sweat, making them easy to care for and handle. If the beads are already dark and lustrous upon purchase, with no visible fibrous lines or pores, appearing solid black under light, they may have been dyed or treated with oil.
The Meaning of Bodhi Seeds
Bodhi seeds are sacred Buddhist objects. The Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and bodhi seeds symbolize awakening, wisdom, knowledge, and the path. In a broader sense, they represent the wisdom to sever worldly afflictions and achieve Nirvana. They are also symbols of good fortune, and long-term wear can bring peace and ward off evil. According to Buddhist scriptures, chanting with bodhi seeds yields immeasurable merit, making them one of the most widely used ritual tools. There are approximately over 300 types of bodhi seeds (seeds from various plants used for bodhi), with over eighteen types used for prayer beads, commonly referred to as "Eighteen Bodhi Beads," signifying the eighteen Arhats. Among these, Star Moon Bodhi, Phoenix Eye Bodhi, Vajra Bodhi, and Qilin Eye Bodhi are considered the four renowned treasures of the bodhi world.
