Description:
This natural jadeite piece is carved into Manjushri Bodhisattva. Manjushri Bodhisattva is one of the Four Great Bodhisattvas in Buddhism. Alongside Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, they serve as the left and right attendants to Shakyamuni Buddha, forming the "Huayan Three Sages." Manjushri Bodhisattva is foremost in wisdom and eloquence, leading all bodhisattvas, and is also known as "Manjushri of Great Wisdom." According to Buddhist scriptures, Manjushri Bodhisattva was the teacher of innumerable past Buddhas and has guided countless practitioners to attain Buddhahood. A characteristic representation of Manjushri Bodhisattva features a lion as a mount, symbolizing the fearless roar that awakens sentient beings from delusion and representing infinite wisdom.
This Manjushri Bodhisattva jadeite is adorned with a five-leaf crown and a gourd-shaped topknot. With long brows, fine eyes cast downward, and a serene, introspective expression, the Bodhisattva's face is finely sculpted. A blooming lotus rests on the right shoulder, while the right hand holds a precious jewel. Flowing silk ribbons drape elegantly around the shoulder and arm, imparting a sense of solemn grace. The lower body is clad in celestial robes and silken skirts, with flowing pleats that suggest soft movement, exuding an air of opulence and nobility. The figure sits in a full lotus position on the right leg, with a crouching lion before it. The left leg is bent and drawn up, adopting a relaxed posture reminiscent of the artistic style of the Song Dynasty's "at-ease Guanyin." This piece is further enhanced by a carving of a lotus flower on the reverse side. The lotus symbolizes purity, "emerging from mud unstained," and represents remaining untainted by worldly troubles.
Overall, this work is a commendable synthesis of form and content, a truly rare find.
This jadeite pendant is of the "Spring Color Ice-Glemy" variety. Spring Color jadeite, also known as "Spring Hue" or "Purple-Green," refers to jadeite that exhibits both purple and green hues. Since ancient times, it has been considered the most elegant and refined type of jadeite, and is exceptionally rare. The scarcity of Spring Color is due to the unique geological conditions required for its formation. The elements responsible for the purple hue (manganese, Mn) and the green hue (chromium, Cr) tend to repel each other, much like the poles of a magnet, making it difficult for them to coexist within the same jadeite stone. Therefore, collecting a piece of Spring Color jadeite is a rare fortune, and one that should be cherished. "Spring" refers to the violet color, and "Color" signifies the emerald green. Currently, raw materials for Spring Color jadeite are extremely scarce in the domestic market, and even moderately good pieces command very high values.
