【NICARAGUA】
Nicaraguan coffee comes from the Jinotega region, located in the north of Nicaragua. It provides the best coffee growing environment in the world. For 150 years, generations of local farmers have been planting high-quality Arabica coffee in a shade-growing way that maintains ecological diversity, intercropping with banana trees, mango trees, mahogany, etc. This planting method also protects local rare flower species. In winter, it becomes a resting place for migrating birds. The average altitude is above 1,200 meters, coexisting harmoniously with the natural environment.
Organically grown and shade-cultivated, the coffee beans are usually larger, with a mellow and moderate taste, bright acidity and an aroma of apricot. The lime-like acidity turns into a sweet aftertaste, with a refreshing citrus aroma and a smooth and long aftertaste.
Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. In the mid-20th century, international coffee market prices experienced a severe blow. In the mid-to-late 20th century, the United States intervened in the surging independence movements in Latin American countries in the name of containing communism and imposed trade barriers on Nicaragua, which in turn inspired many young people in Europe and the United States to join the fair trade movement. For example, in the UK, a solidarity movement was launched in support of Nicaragua, with many people buying coffee from Nicaraguan cooperatives to fight the US trade embargo. With the assistance of international fair trade organizations, Nicaraguan coffee has taken its own international path, won international awards, and been recognized for its quality.
One of ECO-GREEN Nicaragua's partners is ALDEA GLOBAL. In 1992, a group of small farmers established ALDEA GLOBAL Jinotega in order to protect the natural ecology from being destroyed.
The cooperative has gender equality as its primary social goal for improvement, with women accounting for 46% of its members. The cooperative also uses the community development funds (social premium) returned by fair trade to support education and training to improve coffee quality, emergency medical and long-term care programs, microcredit projects, etc. to address poverty issues in remote areas. At the same time, it adheres to its original commitment to environmental sustainability and adopts environmentally friendly sustainable farming methods.
