The core design concept for Kaohsiung 100 is inspired by the Kaohsiung city emblem from the Japanese colonial era. In 1920, when Kaohsiung Prefecture was officially established, the name "Kaohsiung" first appeared in Taiwan's historical records. In 1929, a design competition for the Kaohsiung city emblem was held, and Goro KAWAMOTO, a Japanese designer, used the katakana characters "タ" (TA) and "カ" (KA) from the Japanese pronunciation of Kaohsiung as design elements, overlapping them vertically to represent Kaohsiung. This year marks Kaohsiung's centennial. This design ingeniously incorporates the old Kaohsiung city emblem with the character "百" (hundred) from "Kaohsiung 100," creating a dialogue between the past and present. It draws elements from the historical context of Kaohsiung's development over the past century and looks towards the future, hoping that the people living on Kaohsiung's land will carry their historical memories with them as they move forward together into the next century.
