He is celebrated for merging Western realistic techniques with the traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock printing style. His works primarily feature landscapes, depicting famous Japanese scenery, European and American vistas, and the South Pacific islands. Biography and Background Birthplace: Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan Education: Studied Western painting in Tokyo, apprenticing under renowned artists like Takeuchi Seihō. Early works focused on watercolors and oil paintings. Travels in Europe and America: In the early 1900s, he exhibited oil and watercolor paintings in the United States and Europe. He achieved great success in cities like Boston, Chicago, and New York, accumulating a rich international perspective. Shift to Woodblock Prints: In the 1920s, driven by the Shin-hanga Movement, he began dedicating himself to woodblock print creation. Provides overall composition, character, and landscape design. Ex: Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kawase Hasui. 2️⃣ Publisher (版元, Hanmoto / Publisher) The core of the team, similar to a "Producer + Distributor." Finances and plans the works, deciding on themes and collaborating with artists. Hires carvers and printers, overseeing progress and quality. Responsible for sales and promotion, determining print runs. Ex: Watanabe Shōzaburō of the Shin-hanga Movement. 3️⃣ Carver (彫師, Hōshi / Block Carver) Transfers the artist's sketch onto woodblocks. Each color requires a dedicated woodblock. Requires extremely high technical skill, precise to the millimeter, to avoid color misregistration. 4️⃣ Printer (摺師, Surishi / Printer) Uses woodblocks and pigments to print the image layer by layer onto Japanese paper (washi).
