**Right Whale Rainbow Glimmer Postcard**
The English name for the Right Whale is, quite literally, "Right Whale."
During the era of whaling, their slow swimming speed made them easy to hunt.
Furthermore, their bodies contained a large amount of blubber, causing them to float after being killed, making them convenient to retrieve.
This led whalers to call them the "right whale" to hunt.
.
The three major regions where Right Whales live—the North Pacific, North Atlantic, and Southern Ocean—
are depicted as distinct oceanic zones.
Waves, sea swells, and other elements are rendered in a playful, childlike manner.
Within the illustration, there are five small Right Whales and one adult.
Above the adult Right Whale is the North Star,
symbolizing the seafarers of old who relied on the stars for guidance,
in pursuit of what they called the "right whale."
.
The entire artwork is built upon numerous layers, stacked one upon another, to create a rich and profound sense of depth.
The starry sky is a part I particularly cherish from this piece.
In the presence of the North Star, all other stars seem to pale and recede to the sides.
The delicate interplay of light and stardust
was inspired by my mother's skirt, adorned with sequins and silver threads.
