Onigawara are found on the roofs of Japanese shrines and temples. You will see them in temples in Kyoto, Nara and Kamakura. The Onigawara is meant to keep bad spirits out of the house. According to Feng Shui, bad spirits enter the house from the north-east and south-west directions. If this product is displayed in these directions, bad spirits will not enter the house. Profile of Onishi kumi Onishi kumi is a female onigawara craftswoman who makes handmade onigawara for shrines and temples in Takahama City, Aichi Prefecture. She joined Iwatsuki Onigawara in 2000. She studied under Hideyuki Iwatsuki, a senior onigawara maker in Aichi Prefecture. She has made more than 500 Onigawara for Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, and in recent years she has been working on her own original brand of Onigawara with a feminine touch.
