[Sky Blue Clay]
This clay was refined in 2007 and has been aged for 15 years.
The clay has undergone organic aging and re-firing to prevent muddy textures, which lowers its firing temperature.
The text in "The Compendium of Yixing Teapots" describes Sky Blue Clay:
"Sky Blue Clay, originating from Lishui (a place name east of Huanglong Mountain in Dingshu Town), turns liver-colored when fired. It also contains inclusions.
When fired, it reveals various wondrous transformations."
For this creation, Longshantang fired it three times in a push-plate kiln, resulting in a liver-colored hue.
The circulating flame, heat convection, and exhaust in the push-plate kiln create localized micro-oxidation and micro-reduction, causing the clay to transform more during firing. The final color is lighter and retains a more pronounced granular texture. These granules, not fully crystallized at high temperatures, develop richer surface layers that scatter light, adding depth.
Although initially less brilliant than pieces fired in electric kilns, with a dry and understated surface, its retention of micropores and granules allows for exceptional absorption of tea liquor during use. The tea's essence gradually permeates and settles, forming a soft, mellow patina with a sense of well-aged character. The luster is a gentle, diffuse reflection, embodying a texture born of time.
[Frequently Asked Questions QA]
1. How to season the pot before use?
Clean thoroughly inside and out. A natural sponge is recommended; avoid chemical cleaners. Simply wash with water, and it is ready for use.
2. How to care for the pot?
After each use, keep it clean and dry to prevent tea stains. Store in a well-ventilated area. For long-term storage in its box, allow it to air dry naturally for 1-2 months to ensure all moisture evaporates from the pores, preventing mold.
3. How to clean tea stains or mold?
Soak with an enzyme cleaner.
4. How to properly warm the pot?
In cold weather or after a period of disuse, pour 40°C warm water over the inside and outside of the pot, then fill it completely. This allows the pores to absorb moisture thoroughly.
5. How to care for pieces with engravings?
For pots with engravings, a soft brush is recommended for cleaning.
