About Wood Firing "Wood firing" is a traditional kiln method where the kiln is heated to over 1200°C using firewood. This process results in natural "fire marks" left by the direct flame on the ceramic body, and ash that falls from the burning wood, giving the pieces a warm, lustrous color with rich variations—a realm unattainable by electric or gas kilns. Compared to typical electric and gas kilns, wood firing—from loading the kiln, ignition, to sealing and cooling—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors such as humidity, wood dryness, human control over fire feeding, and kiln placement, can influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher damage rate. Experienced wood-firing artisans carefully consider kiln airflow and pressure when arranging pieces. They meticulously plan the placement of varying sizes, estimate flame paths, manage the feeding of wood and charcoal, and control the firing temperature.
