After browsing the craft store,
I desired a warm crochet hook,
one with a subtle texture and a hint of woody aroma.
Ah!
I decided to make one myself,
and bring nature into my stitches.
Wooden Companions
Solid Wood Crochet Hook / 15-18cm (adjusted to the branch's natural form)
Equivalent to a US 8-9 crochet hook.
Each wooden piece possesses a unique form,
nature's design is truly the most charming!
____________
We collect branches, gather fallen twigs.
I cherish the inherent character of objects,
rather than conforming them to human definitions or frameworks.
When preparing the wood, I follow its natural grain and
respect its posture, meticulously carving it piece by piece with a chisel.
It's like creating miniature, exquisite works of art!

❫
The thickness and curves of each collected branch vary,
making every single piece one-of-a-kind.
After each one is finished, I joyfully explain its unique characteristics – the arch of the head, the thickness, the curves, the subtle differences in width....

Sharpening the tools is the most crucial first step in creating our wooden companions.
Sharpening feels akin to meditation.
We chose two whetstones (coarse and fine).
The fine stone is labeled for "sharpening eel blades" – perhaps sushi chefs use this too?
First, soak it in water for half an hour, then begin slowly sharpening at the water source.
When I first started woodworking, I practiced sharpening the knives daily,
much like kneading clay is the initial practice for pottery.
It's about becoming familiar with your tools!

The process and tools for crafting our wooden companions.
Woodworking tools laid out are truly magnificent,
but the blades are incredibly sharp, so perhaps it's best to admire them from afar.

I used a tamagoyaki pan spatula to create homes for the chisels.
Because some chisels have larger heads and slender bodies,
I specifically shaped the pen holder to have a "waist"
so the chisels wouldn't wobble inside.
❫ ❫ ❫
They are truly exquisite.
Each piece bears the marks of the chisel's careful work
and the wood's natural posture.
Simply placing them on a desk adds a touch of beauty.
