In his early years, he studied psychology at Herbert and William Smith College in Geneva, New York, and later studied for a master's degree in art creation at the University of Washington in Seattle, majoring in painting. Wood is best known for his depictions of everyday environments, and is highly regarded for his interior scenes and landscape paintings. He uses a variety of formal techniques in his works to create visual perspectives that are different from the audience's concepts. Inspired by the discrete compositions of Cubism and the non-realistic and more freehand interior scenes painted by Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse and David Hockney, when creating, Wood would first use photos to establish the composition, and then paint it on the canvas.
