The seventh theme of the Taiwan Mazu Calendar is "Mazu Lives at My Home." You might wonder, "Why doesn't Mazu stay in the temple, but rather in private residences?" Mazu accompanied our ancestors in their arduous journey, "clearing paths and opening up the land," becoming a spiritual anchor. Most Mazu deities were enshrined in temples as faith grew. However, in many places, due to shared veneration by villages and families, several Mazu statues still follow the old custom of moving annually with the designated host family (爐主, lúzhǔ). The dates for this "passing of the incense" (過爐, guòlú) are determined by casting sacred lots. Devotees, carrying the grand and humble regalia of Mazu, lead processions that range from hundreds to tens of thousands, escorting the deity to the new host's home. As if visiting from house to house, They are not just objects of prayer, but also our family. Miraculous blessings from Mazu residing in homes, such as flourishing businesses and prosperous descendants, are countless and become favorite topics of conversation. Because they have long been enshrined in private homes, they are not easily accessible for worship. "You can only worship Mazu if you can find the host," has become a unique characteristic.
