Artist: Richard Serra Richard Serra (American, born 1938) is one of the preeminent sculptors of our time, long acclaimed for his challenging and innovative works that emphasize materiality as well as audience , the interaction between the site and the work. In the early 1960s, Serra and his generation of Minimalist artists turned to unconventional, industrial materials and began emphasizing the physical properties of their art. Over the years, Serra expanded his spatial and temporal approach to sculpture, focusing primarily on large-scale works, including many site-specific works related to specific architectural, urban, or landscape contexts. Serra's early works were rather abstract, consisting of molten lead splattered with great force onto the walls of a studio or exhibition space. However, Serra's better known works are his minimalist large-scale installations using metal rolls or sheet metal (Corten steel). In these works, most of the installations are able to stand on their own, with special emphasis on the weight and texture of the material itself. His outdoor steel sculptures are oxidized beforehand, but after 8 to 10 years the color produced by the rust of the steel will become a stable single color. Serra often creates site-specific installations that contrast strongly with the viewer's scale.
