"Don't Monkey Around!"
Why do private investigator ads, commonly seen everywhere, always use the term "catch a monkey"? There are three theories: The first originates from the Japanese colonial era, where Taiwanese would catch monkeys and break their tails to prevent them from escaping into the mountains. Similarly, those who caught adulterers would cut off their hair as punishment. The second theory extends the "leading a monkey" act from monkey shows to signify an improper relationship. The third theory suggests that in the past, wives often referred to their husbands as "old monkeys," hence the term "catch a monkey." With the development of online information, individuals can increasingly access information easily. However, in the early days, private investigators, beyond their investigative functions, perhaps served more like an underground counseling unit, supporting the helpless souls within anxious families.
