A Century Old 1875 UK Edition of Charles Dickens' *A Tale of Two Cities*
*A Tale of Two Cities* stands as one of the most celebrated novels in modern literature, a sweeping historical saga set against the tumultuous French Revolution. Its profoundly touching plot has cemented its status as a global literary masterpiece. The story intricately weaves together the vibrant metropolises of Paris and London, centering on the family of a doctor and a couple of revolutionary leaders of commoner origins in the Saint Antoine district, unveiling the dark secrets hidden by the French aristocracy...
Charles Dickens' works were immensely popular among readers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His narratives consistently delved into the realities of the lower strata of society, challenging the social issues of the time in Britain. One might wonder how he maintained such a prolific career despite tackling such controversial themes. His powerful patron was none other than Queen Victoria herself, a devoted admirer. After Dickens' passing, Queen Victoria even decreed his burial in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey, a testament to her profound esteem for him.
# Following the release of copyright for Charles Dickens' works, they were printed and published by numerous different publishers. Curiously, later editions often lack publication years, a detail that has always intrigued me.
What makes this particular book exceptional is that it was published by the original publisher, Chapman & Hall, and it is clearly dated 1875. This edition comes from the collection of a university library, complete with its catalog card and circulation records. The catalog card even lists the donor's name and acquisition details. The widespread digitization efforts in American universities made these library holdings available for auction.
After its publication by Chapman & Hall in Britain, this book was acquired in the United States, then donated to a library by a collector. From there, it was released by the library and acquired by an antique dealer, from whom I purchased it. Its century-long provenance is exceptionally clear... a truly rare find.
# This edition is a printmaking edition, featuring numerous illustrations created by Virtue & Co., a renowned Victorian-era engraving firm.
# Among Charles Dickens' works, *A Tale of Two Cities* holds the highest collectible value, akin to Jane Austen's *Pride and Prejudice*. In an era when numerous publishers mass-produced his works, an edition with a dated imprint from the original publisher is exceptionally precious and worthy of collection.
Dimensions: 20.9*15cm
