Astrophytum capricorne, a species of ornamental succulent in the Cactaceae family, is native to central Mexico. The solitary plant grows as a flattened to globular sphere, reaching a diameter of 12-13 cm. Its body is a pale greenish-blue with a subtle whitish undertone, giving it an elegant appearance. It features 8-9 prominent, flattened, rhombic ribs. The radial spines number 5-7, with a single central spine. The spines are ivory-colored, strikingly accented with red in the middle. In spring, it produces pale pink to white bell-shaped flowers at its apex, with a flower diameter of 5.5-6 cm.
Astrophytum species are generally robust and adaptable. They thrive in environments with abundant sunlight and good air circulation, though some shading is recommended during peak midday sun in summer. Keeping the soil slightly dry in winter can help them tolerate temperatures as low as 5Β°C.
Soil Medium
Cacti are known for their drought and sun tolerance, capable of surviving for 1-2 months without water. Overwatering, however, can easily lead to root rot. Therefore, a loose and well-draining medium is ideal. A recommended ratio is 'Granular Soil: Peat Soil = 7:3'. Incorporate an appropriate amount of general-purpose organic granular fertilizer, avoiding fertilization during high temperatures and winter. Be careful not to splash water or fertilizer onto the plant. The designer has already added a suitable amount of slow-release fertilizer to the potting mix, so you don't need to worry about this.
Sunlight
Prefers environments with abundant sunlight and good air circulation, but some shading is recommended during peak midday sun in summer. It can thrive in full or partial sun. Even with insufficient light indoors, its strong vitality allows it to survive, though it may grow less attractively or become etiolated. For healthy and beautiful growth, placing it in a sunny location is recommended.
Watering
During the growing seasons of spring and summer, water thoroughly. Follow the principle of "water only when dry, and water thoroughly when you do." Ensure that the pot does not retain excess water after watering. Water approximately once a week in summer and every 10-14 days in winter. Keep the soil dry during winter, which allows it to tolerate temperatures as low as 3Β°C for short periods. During cold snaps in winter, it can be temporarily moved indoors for protection.
Succulents and cacti are influenced by water and light, and watering frequency will vary with the environment and climate. Generally, watering once a week is sufficient.
