Many people's impression of Lily of the Valley (LoV) likely comes from perfumes by houses like Penhaligon's or Guerlain, and few have actually smelled the true floral aroma. This spring, while the weather was still a bit cool, I ordered a pot of LoV, was fortunate enough to grow it until it bloomed, and experienced the exquisite air of a French May morning. The small, white, drooping flowers evoke a feeling somewhere between reality and fairy tale, like a scene from an Andersen story where Thumbelina could peek out from the flower at any moment, suggesting something spiritual and yet lovely.
I didn't fully grasp the concept of "sillage" until I encountered LoV. Its fragrance possesses a strong, airy quality, as if a layer of scent is encircling the stamen. Whether in fragrance or form, its presence not only elevates itself but also makes the surrounding environment feel refined and elegant.
The top note of LoV carries a slight soapiness, reminiscent of newly washed clothes, giving a refreshing sensation. Then, very faintly, you can detect the greenness of fresh grass, along with the scent of Bartlett pear already blended into the white florals. The small LoV flowers also contribute a hint of almond and the creamy aroma of Ylang-Ylang.
