Wood-fired kiln fired brushed patterned ware vase, sphere

This flower vase is made from coarse red ceramic clay that gives it an earthenware feel, shaped into a large, round sphere and decorated with a brush pattern made of white decorative clay. The pottery is fired in a wood-fired kiln rather than the electric kiln that is usually used. The pottery studio in Fukuoka that I work with fires pottery in a climbing kiln once a year. A climbing kiln is a type of wood-fired kiln that uses firewood to heat the pot without using electricity, kerosene, or gas. The temperature inside the furnace reaches as high as 1,300°C, and as the molten glaze gets splashed with wood ash and the flames hit the base material, each piece takes on a pattern that cannot be controlled by human hands. The firing process takes more than a week, from firing to taking the clay out of the kiln. The flavor that resides in each and every piece is truly exceptional, and speaks to the power of the flame and the hard work and experience of the people who bring it out. This vase was born from such careful and time-consuming effort. This was baked a year ago and has been carefully stored, so of course it is unused. It is larger than the vases I usually make, and has a strong presence. The rounded shape is cute, and the texture of the finished product, typical of a climbing kiln, gives it a sophisticated feel. We do not apply glaze to the surface, instead valuing the atmosphere created by the base material itself, decorative mud, and ash. The inside is glazed, so the parts that come into contact with water are coated. Using various glazes and clays, I create a wide variety of pottery in different colors and shapes, searching for the best combinations. It is impossible to create two identical pieces, so although they may look similar, each piece is unique. I would be very happy if you could find your favorite.
