The calligraphy nib is ground and adjusted from an EF nib to have a curved tip. Line width variation is not solely achieved by pressing down, but by the angle of the pen holder. Utilizing the curve at the tip of the nib creates different line widths. Holding the pen at a more upright angle results in less contact area between the nib and the paper, producing a finer line. The more the pen holder is tilted or slight pressure is applied, the larger the contact area between the nib and the paper, resulting in a thicker line. The ability to write thick or thin lines depends on your proficiency (each nib has a certain tolerance for pressure; do not apply excessive force to avoid damaging or misaligning the nib.
