Their **primary differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**. **「Water-Ground Cinnabar」** **A classic true red with a slight orange hue. It has a warm, matte finish that becomes brighter with wear, developing a patina.** The production method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, letting it settle, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This is then allowed to settle again (a water-grinding purification process). The resulting cinnabar mud at the bottom is air-dried and then pressed using traditional methods. The cross-section will still show fine, uniform mineral sparkle. **「Imperial Cinnabar」** **A brighter, more vibrant true red, with higher hardness.** The production method involves refining natural cinnabar ore through multiple processes including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-grinding/high polishing**, followed by traditional pressing. Imperial Cinnabar has almost no visible mineral sparkle on the surface, but it does internally. The surface undergoes a **high-polishing** process, giving it a metallic sheen that is particularly striking in sunlight. **「Purple Gold Cinnabar」** **A purplish-red color, with slightly lower hardness than Imperial Cinnabar.** The production method involves multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/screening** from natural cinnabar ore, but **without water-grinding purification**. Therefore, the surface is less refined and has small, scattered mineral sparkles, creating a "starry sky" effect. **「Crystal Cinnabar」** **A purplish-red color, translucent.** These are large cinnabar particles directly chipped from cinnabar ore. Large crystal particles are clearly visible on the surface. "丹" is an ideogrammic compound character. In ancient times, miners would dig wells into the earth to extract minerals. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something extracted from a dug well, which is cinnabar. Because cinnabar is red, mostly a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā, red sand) became known as "朱砂" (zhūshā, cinnabar). Avoid corrosive substances Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar. 2. Avoid contact with metal objects The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible darkening or blackening of the cinnabar. 3. Avoid high temperatures The mercuric sulfide in cinnabar's composition will only release at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius.
