Each piece is carefully crafted by artisans in Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, a region famous for its history and as a major production center for lacquerware.
Lacquerware made from natural wood has a longer history than ceramics. Its key feature is that despite being light and thin, it does not transfer heat easily, allowing you to hold hot soups comfortably in your hands.
For the natural wood base, we use strictly selected "Sen" (Castor Aralia) wood grown in the severe cold of Hokkaido.
The shape features beautiful, smooth curves that fit naturally in your hands. The rim is designed with a "Hazori" (outward flare) shape and just the right thinness to make sipping soups easy, while the "Koudai" (base ring) is shaped to accommodate your fingers for a stable grip.
This large size is perfect not only for miso soup with many ingredients but also for Ozoni (New Year's soup), noodles, and rice bowls.
Furthermore, the traditional lacquer colors not only enhance the presentation of the food, making it look delicious and warm, but you can also enjoy the unique aging process of lacquerware, where the colors become more vivid with use over time.
On the bottom, there is an engraving with a motif of hands pressed together in prayer. This represents the Japanese customs of saying "Itadakimasu" (before meals) and "Gochisousama" (after meals), expressing gratitude to the ingredients and the people who prepared the food.
