With a ring of yellow-white stripes along the outer edge of its head, its face forms a distinct heart shape. At first glance, it closely resembles a monkey's face, hence its nickname "monkey-faced owl." Among the known owls in Taiwan, it is the only species that does not inhabit forests, preferring the grasslands of shallow hills and mountains.
