The history of Tanbayaki in Japan can be traced back to the Heian period (794~1185 AD), and it is one of the six ancient kilns in Japan along with Setoyaki (せとやき) and Shigarakiyaki (しがらきやき), and several other kilns. Like Tokonameyaki, Echizenyaki, Shigarakiyaki, and Bizenyaki, most of the ancient kilns were fired without glaze, but although the traditional Tanbayaki is not glazed, it will be coated with a layer of iron-rich pottery. The high-quality make-up soil will make the pottery body show a maroon tone after being fired in the kiln, and then the pine firewood ash used in Tanba Yaki when firing the kiln falls on the pottery due to the high temperature in the kiln. Chemical changes occur to form a thin layer of turquoise or yellow-green glass crystallization layer. This simple and flowing beauty is a feeling that is difficult to see in modern ceramics! In addition, due to the age of this work, there are traces of damage, but it has been restored by another classic Japanese technique "kintsugi". The beautiful lines after kintsugi add another kind of beauty to this rough work!
