Shigaraki ware is one of the Six Ancient Kilns in Japan.
It is carefully made by craftspeople in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, who inherited the tradition born from a long history that has continued since the 8th century.
The potter’s clay used as raw material is coarse, lightweight, and extremely fire-resistant.
It is primarily created by mixing and kneading three types of clay with different properties, which increases its strength, equips it with heat retention, and makes it suitable for making not only large and thick objects such as pots and flower vases, but also tableware.
The “Sake Cup” was made by taking advantage of these characteristics.
It can hold hot sake without easily losing heat, and can also keep cold sake cool.
Since it is made of natural materials and considered to be non-reactive, you can enjoy the pure taste of sake without sacrificing its original flavor.
The “Sake Cup,” each carefully ground one by one on a potter’s wheel by the intuition of craftspeople, creates a unique rustic and warm texture by revealing the unevenness due to the large and small stones of the potter’s clay and overlapping with the deep glaze.
Just as there are wine glasses and decanters for wine, there are Katakuchi and Guinomi sake cups for sake. It is a profound and excellent product that allows you to not only savor sake and enjoy the act of drinking it, but also appreciate old Japanese culture and tradition.
