The Italian Vegetable Tanning Association was founded in 1994 in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is a non-profit organization that currently has 19 member tanneries. Tanners who are members of the association adhere to traditional manufacturing methods and spare no time in producing and supplying high-quality vegetable tanned leather.
Philosophy of the association (from the association website)
Made in Tuscany
The association's headquarters are located in Tuscany, halfway between Florence and Pisa, along the River Arno. The production area is at the cutting edge of technology and management, and the tanners who are members of the association work in symbiotic relationship with the environment.
Well-controlled quality
When joining the association, tanners undertake to accept regular checks on their compliance with manufacturing regulations. The checks are carried out by the independent certification body ICE.C (Leather Industry Quality Certification Authority).
metal free
The manufacturing processes carried out by our member tanneries have long been metal-free. This is because we use raw materials based on a centuries-old tradition of vegetable tanning. A manufacturing process that adheres to the principles of sustainability and circularity results in natural products based on tradition.
No animals are killed or injured to obtain leather.
The raw hides used in tanneries are made from the raw materials left when cows raised for food are slaughtered. Additionally, these cows were raised in European countries that comply with EU regulations regarding animal housing conditions. Tanneries utilize byproducts from the food industry without wasting them and create beautiful products.
natural raw materials
The tanning process is carried out using natural tannins of vegetable origin. Unlike synthetic raw materials, these tannins are derived from renewable sources and are valued for their excellent antioxidant, antibiotic, and antibacterial properties.
environmental certificate
The Tuscan leather industry district is the only one in Italy to be certified by EMAS (Eco-management and Audit Scheme). This certification system is one of the tools promoted by the EU to encourage the implementation of responsible environmental strategies.
social responsibility
The association has adopted the guidelines of the international standard ISO 26000 regarding the social responsibility of organizations, and the association focuses on respect for the environment and human rights, transparency, and legality as conditions for using the trademark ``Tuscan vegetable tanned leather.'' It is set at
Compliance with laws and regulations
The Association complies with all relevant Italian and European legislation. We constantly strive to guarantee human health, the conservation of plant and animal species, and the protection of the area's landscape, architectural, artistic and cultural heritage. I am.
work ethics
The association and its member tanneries comply with current laws and regulations regarding the health and safety of workers in the workplace, labor contracts and pay, and do not discriminate on the basis of gender, ethnicity or religion.
circular economy
Tanneries affiliated with the association utilize a centralized wastewater treatment facility owned by the association. This facility has been checked by the responsible agency to ensure that wastewater generated during the process is properly treated and purified. In accordance with the recover-recycle-reuse principles of the circular economy, waste generated during various stages of manufacturing is processed and transformed into materials that can be used in other industries.
