This is called "crazing" or "kintsugi" and is a normal variation of the glaze. . For first-time use, prepare a pot of rice water. Line the bottom of the pot with a paper towel, place the vessel in the pot, and submerge it completely. Simmer over low heat for twenty minutes, then let it cool. The starch from the rice will fill the pores of the pottery, preventing future stains and odors. This process can be repeated periodically for maintenance.
