Sipping morning dew, a gentle breeze
Carries thoughts through rustling trees.
High above, its voice carries far,
Not by autumn winds, but by its own star.

"A jade cicada sings eternally, its green shadow shimmering. This hand-carved cicada from Taiwanese jade features fluid lines, a warm and delicate jade texture, as deep green as pine and as steady as the night. The cicada's body is round and full, its wing patterns intricately detailed and clear, its form naturally lively, as if resting lightly, poised to sing. Since antiquity, the cicada has symbolized purity and longevity. This jade cicada further embodies noble character and cultural resonance, ideal as a waist adornment for scholars or as a hand-held piece for contemplation, to feel the jade's gentle touch and the marvel of its carving. This piece is not merely an artwork, but a condensation of time and craftsmanship."
"Jade Diao Chan · Four Pillars of Character" inherits Master Huang Yi-Hsiung's carving philosophy, presenting the profound meaning of "character" through four cicada-shaped carvings. The cicada, since ancient times, has symbolized incorruptibility and purity, untouched by the world, and the jade's verdant hue enhances its vitality. Each of the four styles possesses its unique charm, from the flowing lines to the detailed textures, all imbued with the essence of "resilience, dynamism, elegance, and clarity." It signifies maintaining one's core principles through life's trials, reflecting an unyielding character.
Master Huang Yi-Hsiung, cherishing jade and honoring it, adheres to traditional carving methods, working with the natural grain and form of the jade to preserve its integrity. With the most precise cuts, he brings out the jade's warmth, translucence, color, and patterns to their fullest. Each piece is a testament to craftsmanship tailored to the material, embodying both the natural beauty of Taiwanese jade and imbuing each stone with a unique soul.
Jade cicadas have carried rich cultural meanings since ancient times. In Chinese and East Asian cultures, the cicada, with its unique life cycle, molting and rebirth, and its pure image, has become a symbol for many cultural concepts.
1. Longevity and Rebirth — "Cicada Sheds, New Life Emerges"
The cicada's life involves a long period of dormancy and growth, with larval stages lasting years, even decades, underground, before emerging, metamorphosing into an adult, and taking flight. This life journey symbolizes "rebirth" and "new beginnings." In traditional culture, jade cicadas are often considered auspicious symbols, representing overcoming adversity and ascending to a higher realm.
▶️ Taiwanese jade, with its tough yet delicate texture, embodies the spirit of "accumulating strength for a powerful breakthrough," echoing the cicada's life cycle and symbolizing life's transformation and transcendence.
2. Nobility and Integrity — "Sustained by Dew"
Ancient Chinese believed the cicada sustained itself solely on tree sap and dew, thus viewing it as a symbol of nobility and purity. Particularly in the poetry of scholars and gentlemen, the cicada was often likened to a person of high moral character, one who disdained fame and fortune.
▶️ Taiwanese jade's deep and understated hue, like its clear and flawless green, aligns with the ancient belief of "jade is like a gentleman," giving the jade cicada a more profound meaning of "noble and detached from the mundane," making it a fitting symbol of a gentleman's virtue.
3. Smooth Official Career and Flying High — "A Cry that Stuns"
In ancient China, the cicada, perched high on branches and with its clear, bright song, was seen as a symbol of "promotion." Therefore, wearing a jade cicada carried the auspicious meaning of "steadily ascending," making it particularly favored by scholars preparing for imperial examinations and officials, symbolizing a smooth career and good fortune.
▶️ The green tones of Taiwanese jade are believed to bring auspicious energy. When carved into the shape of a cicada, this symbolism of "ascension" and "high position" is further amplified, making it suitable for those wishing to advance in their careers or studies, either as a personal adornment or a collectible.
4. Loyalty and Immortality — "Soul Returns to the Jade Cicada"
In ancient burial customs, jade cicadas were often placed in the mouth of the deceased (known as "mouth cicadas" or "han chan"), symbolizing the soul's immortality and rebirth in the afterlife, as well as unwavering loyalty. This tradition dates back to the Han Dynasty, when aristocrats often buried jade objects with them, hoping for blessings in the next life.
▶️ Taiwanese jade, imbued with millennia of spiritual essence and possessing a warm, delicate texture, aligns with the concept of "endless life and eternal soul," bestowing deeper spiritual significance upon the jade cicada.
5. Spirituality and Protection — "Spiritual Cicada"
The cicada's clear and resonant call has long been associated with the spiritual realm in ancient beliefs. In Taoist and Buddhist cultures, the cicada also symbolizes quiet cultivation and enlightenment, representing detachment from the mundane world and spiritual elevation.
▶️ The natural patterns and colors of Taiwanese jade make each carved cicada unique, as if possessing a spirit. Wearing a jade cicada can serve as a protective charm, while also reminding the wearer to maintain inner purity and awareness.
A jade cicada carving is not merely a work of art but a vessel of culture. From longevity and rebirth, nobility and integrity, to career success and the immortality of the soul, each meaning endows the jade cicada with different values. When these symbolic meanings are combined with Taiwanese jade, the jade cicada becomes a precious adornment that embodies both traditional spirit and modern aesthetic value.
Master Huang Yi-Hsiung's choice of Taiwanese jade for carving the "Jade Diao Chan · Four Pillars of Character" is not only a testament to his utmost respect for the material but also showcases the ultimate skill of traditional carving techniques, allowing these profound meanings to be passed down through the ages via the warm jade. All works are accompanied by an appraisal and collection certificate.
