Next to the old fabric shop on Minquan Road in Tainan, gimgoanheng is a long-standing mullet roe shop, adorned with mullet roe decorations hanging from the ceiling and a friendly elderly owner. During Lunar New Year when I was little, my grandmother would always prepare mullet roe, pan-fried with rice wine, then sliced thinly to enjoy with hot pot. Growing up, whenever I tasted mullet roe at banquets or year-end parties, I'd recall that simple, happy flavor from the past. I remember once helping a friend buy mullet roe, watching the elderly owner patiently wrap each piece and pack it into a box, which I found deeply moving.
