Bamboo cutlery has joined the popular bamboo chopsticks.
We received a request from a customer who uses wooden plates and wiping lacquerware, saying, "With metal cutlery, the wiping lacquerware and wooden bowls will be scratched, so I want a wooden cutlery." I have been working on sample production through trial and error.
Metal cutlery has long been popular in situations where it is used as a set with porcelain, as in Western cuisine, and when vessels are also used for metal, as in Korea. At Japanese dining tables, porcelain has increased, but I think many people are using pottery and wooden vessels. The shape is not limited to plates, but I think it is a bowl or bowl-like container, so there are many menus that are difficult to use with metal cutlery.
On the other hand, there are many wooden spoons and forks, but due to the characteristics of the material, many are thick, and I felt that many of them were used with priority given to the feeling of "enjoying the wooden material." I've never met a spoon that feels good and eats "normally".
I want to make it with a soft-tasting material in a shape that is close to the metal cutlery that I am accustomed to using and that is easy to use. With that in mind, I decided to use bamboo as the material. Bamboo is more supple than wood and can be broken into very small pieces along the direction of the fibers. I use bamboo from Kyoto. We made it as thin as possible by accumulating prototypes with craftsmen who know all about bamboo products.
If it is not painted, the surface will be wide and maintenance will be difficult. Urethane coating eliminates the feel of bamboo, and when scooping hot things, the smell is also annoying. I decided to finish it with wiping lacquer.
As shown in the photo, the front part of the handle corresponds to the outer skin of the bamboo. Is it easy to imagine because there are knots? Like chopsticks, this outer skin is not coated with lacquer. Because it is a leather, it repels moisture and lacquer well, so it does not get on even if it is applied, so the bamboo material itself is left.
