▰▰▰▰▰▰AMITA▰▰▰▰▰▰
Founded in Kobe in 1932, Amita re-established its Damascene factory in Kyoto in 1946 after World War II. In 1952, Amita Damascene Co., Ltd. was designated by the Japanese government as an official export retailer (duty-free shop), producing many items for export to the West. This also allowed the proprietor to acquire some Japanese pieces from Western collections.
The art of metal inlay craftsmanship can be traced back over 2,000 years to the capital of Syria, Damascus. It later spread to the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century with the Moorish invasion and simultaneously entered Japan via the Silk Road.
The process involves using a base of iron or copper alloy, into which fine lines are incised. Thin sheets of genuine gold and silver are then crafted into patterns and meticulously hammered into these lines. A layer of lacquer is applied and fired to prevent oxidation and rust of the base metal, followed by polishing. Finally, intricate micro-engraving techniques are employed before the pieces are set into jewelry.
