Collection description
Castiglione (1688-1766 AD) was an Italian Jesuit missionary in China. He served the imperial court with his superb painting skills and served in the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong dynasties. He is good at painting people, flowers, birds, and animals. In this painting, there are hundreds of horses in different postures, playing in the grassland. The trees, rocks, landscapes and figures are all realistic and exquisite. The whole painting has rich colors, complex composition, and vivid images. It also uses traditional Chinese painting techniques and adds Western light and shadow perspective and Western paints, making the picture appear to be an eclectic mix of Chinese and Western tastes. It is one of Lang's early typical representative works.
