A lacquerware rice bowl is hard to find.
A woodcarver from Nagano carves a bowl from a keyaki tree, and a lacquerer from Yamanaka rubs lacquer into the wooden bowl using a technique called suri-urushi.
This bowl was created with the aim of creating a beautiful form and ease of use that makes the most of the texture of the wood and the luster of the black lacquer.
This bowl was created from scratch by two craftsmen through much trial and error.
The material used is Zelkova. It has beautiful grain and is a wood suitable for making tall bowls. Zelkova has been loved for a long time in Japan.
The distinctive feature of the shape is the enclosed base and the ease of use as a rice bowl. Because it is a rice bowl, it is slightly thicker than a soup bowl. It has a slightly recessed shape, like a rice bowl.
It is designed to be versatile and can be used for a wide range of dishes, including noodles like udon, salads, stews, and rice bowls.
Wooden bowls are characterized by their lightness and insulating properties. This lightness is especially noticeable in larger bowls such as rice bowls. Larger sizes of wooden and lacquerware are especially recommended. Because they are light, they are also popular among the elderly. They are less likely to break than ceramics, so they can be used by the whole family, from children to the elderly.
The finish is wiped lacquer. It is a technique in which the lacquer is rubbed in repeatedly, as if wiping it. The black lacquer is rubbed in multiple times, resulting in a beautiful finish with subtle hues. The color combination was decided after trial and error, trying more than 10 patterns. The grain of the Zelkova wood is softly visible, but the black tightens the atmosphere.
The lacquer artisan's careful work results in a lustrous finish. As it is lacquered, it is resistant to moisture and can be used daily without hesitation. As long as you avoid strong friction, microwaves, and refrigerators, there is no need for delicate handling.
When you try using lacquerware, you will find that it is very comfortable to use, with its lightness and insulating properties. It is also soft to the touch, making it the perfect material for bowls. It keeps stews and soups warm, so you can enjoy hot food.
This is a simple and beautiful lacquerware bowl, with neither a heavy design nor a heavy finish. Both the wood base and the lacquer are handmade by artisans. We hope you will take this opportunity to try lacquerware for yourself.
