This simple and sleek single flower vase is made using a coarse red earthenware clay that highlights its earthy nature, along with white slip.
At the pottery studio I frequent in Fukuoka, they fire their kilns once a year in a *noborigama*.
A *noborigama* is a type of wood-fired kiln that uses no electricity, kerosene, or gas, relying solely on burning wood.
The interior reaches extremely high temperatures of up to 1300°C. As melted glaze interacts with wood ash and flames directly touch the clay, unique characteristics emerge on each piece, patterns that cannot be controlled by human hands.
The firing process, from lighting the kiln to unloading the finished pieces, takes over a week.
The resulting patina on each vessel is truly exceptional, a testament to the power of the flame and the persistent efforts and experience of the artisans.
This single flower vase is a product of such meticulous care and time, fired in December 2025.
The areas touched by the wood flame have a deep, char-like texture, offering a glimpse into the unique artistry of wood-fired kilns.
Where the white slip is thinner, it blends with the iron content of the clay, creating a soft, sunset-like crimson hue.
The metallic sheen that appears on the reverse side is another distinctive characteristic of the *noborigama*.
Please enjoy exploring its beauty from every angle.
Due to the porous nature of ceramics, this vase has been treated with a waterproofing agent.
This treatment ensures it holds water for approximately 40 hours. However, there's a possibility that some evaporated moisture might slightly dampen the base over time.
If this is a concern, placing a fabric mat underneath can provide reassurance during use.
I continuously explore new combinations of glazes and clays, creating a variety of ceramic pieces in different colors and forms.
Each piece is unique, bearing subtle variations that make them one-of-a-kind, even when they appear similar.
It brings me great joy when someone finds a piece that truly resonates with them.
I invite you to savor the unique character and texture of ceramics born from the embrace of wood flames.
