Shuifei cinnabar, Imperial cinnabar, Zijin cinnabar, and Crystal cinnabar are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods.**
**「Shuifei Cinnabar (Water-Milled Cinnabar)」**
**A true vibrant red, with a slight orange undertone. Its surface has a warm, matte luster that will become more polished with wear, forming a patina.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding cinnabar into fine particles to form a paste, stirring with water, and then collecting the upper "cloudy liquid" after settling. This is followed by further settling and precipitation (the water-milling purification process). The bottom cinnabar mud is then air-dried and pressed using ancient methods. Fine mineral sparkles can still be seen on the cross-section.
**「Imperial Cinnabar」**
**A more vibrant red color with higher hardness.**
The production method involves gradually purifying natural cinnabar ore through multiple processes, including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-milling/high polishing**, before being pressed using ancient methods. Imperial cinnabar has almost no visible mineral sparkles on the surface, but has them internally. The surface undergoes a **high polishing** process, presenting a metallic luster, especially in sunlight, which enhances its metallic feel.
**「Zijin Cinnabar (Purple-Gold Cinnabar)」**
**A purplish-red color with slightly lower hardness than Imperial cinnabar.**
The production method involves multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/screening** from natural cinnabar ore, but **without water-milling purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine and has scattered small mineral sparkles, giving a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal Cinnabar」**
**A purplish-red color, translucent.**
These are large cinnabar crystals directly chipped from cinnabar ore. The crystal particles are clearly visible on the surface, and under light, they are translucent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.

**> Cinnabar**
The earliest documented records refer to cinnabar simply as "丹" (dān). The character "丹" is an ideogram. Ancient miners would dig shafts into the earth to extract minerals. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng - well) with a dot in the middle, signifying the extraction of something from a mine shaft. This "something" was cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā - red sand) became known as cinnabar. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregularly shaped mineral particles.
The color of cinnabar is famously long-lasting. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is also an indispensable component of "八宝印泥" (bābǎo yìnní - eight-treasure ink paste), whose main ingredient is also cinnabar.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have gathered the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the positive energy of the universe. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a very strong yang energy magnetic field. We can observe that while jade feels cool in the hand, cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Taoist rituals for drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and suppressing negative energies. Cinnabar has always been regarded by people as a superior material for improving luck, suppressing evil, driving away negative influences, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great fortune, prosperity, and well-being.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herbal medicine, often used in treatments for calming the spirit, detoxification, and alleviating insomnia and excessive dreaming.
For us living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also cultivate one's character, nourish the eyes, and soothe the heart.
**> Identification**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar and have a significant weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will cause it to turn black. (Please heat indirectly. It is generally not recommended to burn the finished product directly, as it is difficult to control the time and area. Prolonged heating can cause irreversible blackening.)
>. Real cinnabar can draw orange-red lines on paper. (To avoid damaging the aesthetic of the finished product, please draw on inconspicuous areas or use the complimentary bead for testing.)
**> Care**
1. Avoid Corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and is insoluble in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can cause corrosion.
2. Avoid Contact with Metal
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling or blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercury sulfide in cinnabar only releases at temperatures above 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as you avoid exposing cinnabar jewelry to high-temperature environments, you can wear it with confidence.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects.
Cinnabar has high hardness but is brittle; be careful to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean
If the cinnabar appears dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original luster! You can gently wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry.
6. Oiling for Maintenance
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the surface of the finished product, allowing the stone to absorb the oil and become more lustrous and clear. After applying oil, it can be sealed in a brocade box, possibly wrapped in plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the brocade lining.
7. Frequent Handling
Regularly handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your person. This allows a thin layer of natural oils from your skin to coat the surface, making it appear more rustic and elegant over time.
The actual item is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
