|Product introduction |
The Madara Rider relief is located in the village of Madara in Shumen, Bulgaria, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Archaeologists consider the Madara Rider statue to be the oldest surviving artifact from Bulgaria's history after its establishment as a nation.
The Madara Rider relief was created between the late 7th and early 8th centuries and is an important symbol of Bulgarian history. The relief is carved into a rock face 23 meters above the ground and depicts a knight holding reins in his left hand and a spear in his right, having just thrown it. A lion, pierced by the spear, lies at his feet. Above the relief, there is an inscription detailing significant historical events from three different periods in Bulgaria's history.
In a nationwide vote held in Bulgaria in 1980 to celebrate the 1300th anniversary of the country's founding, the Madara Rider was chosen as a national symbol and appeared on coins issued between 1992 and 2002.
