**> Types of Cinnabar**
Water-milled sand, Emperor sand, Purple-gold sand, and Crystal sand are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **primary differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**.
**「Water-Milled Sand」**
**A true red, leaning slightly towards orange. It has a warm, matte finish that becomes more lustrous with wear, developing a patina.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding cinnabar into fine particles to form a paste, mixing it with water, and then collecting the upper "cloudy liquid" after settling. This liquid is then allowed to settle again to purify the cinnabar (water-milling method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then pressed using traditional methods. Fine, shimmering mineral particles are still visible in its cross-section.
**「Emperor Sand」**
**A brighter, true red with higher hardness.**
The production method involves multiple stages of purification from natural cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-milling/high polishing**, followed by traditional pressing. Emperor sand has almost no visible surface shimmer, but it is present internally. The surface is treated with a **high-polishing** process to achieve a metallic sheen, especially striking in sunlight.
**「Purple-Gold Sand」**
**A purplish-red hue with slightly lower hardness than Emperor sand.**
The production method involves multiple steps from natural cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/sieving**, but **without water-milling purification**. Therefore, the surface is less refined and features scattered, small shimmering mineral particles, resembling a starry sky.
**「Crystal Sand」**
**A translucent purplish-red color.**
These are large cinnabar particles directly chipped from cinnabar ore. Visible crystal grains are clear on the surface, and they appear transparent under light, emitting a fluorescent red glow.
**> Spring Planting & Autumn Harvest**
**All graceful, poetic, and beautiful things in this world tend to unfold naturally, much like the changing seasons.**
**Learn to slow down, quiet your mind, approach life with gentleness, and respect the power of time. Allow everything to grow organically, like a tree standing firm and unfearful, developing clear growth rings.**
**Our craftsmanship is much the same!!**
**> Cinnabar**
The earliest written records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). This character is a pictogram, depicting miners extracting minerals from a well. Thus, "丹" is essentially the character for "well" (井) with a dot in the middle, signifying the extraction of something from a mine.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā) became known as cinnabar. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes its irregular, granular form.
Cinnabar's color is exceptionally enduring. In Chinese calligraphy and painting, the term "丹青" (dānqīng) is used, where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is also a crucial component of the "Eight Treasures Seal Paste."
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have absorbed the essence of the sun and moon, gathering positive energy. This is why cinnabar held in hand feels warm, unlike jade, which feels cool.
Historically, cinnabar has been indispensable in Taoist rituals for drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and pacifying negative energies. It has long been regarded as a supreme item for attracting good fortune, averting misfortune, suppressing negative influences, and bringing wealth and prosperity. It carries auspicious meanings of great luck, wealth, and peace.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herb, often used in medicinal treatments for calming the spirit, detoxification, and alleviating insomnia and excessive dreaming.
For us living in modern times, owning a piece of cinnabar craftsmanship can also cultivate self-discipline, enhance well-being, and bring peace of mind.
**> Authentication**
**All cinnabar products in our collection are high-content cinnabar with a substantial weight. You can authenticate them using the following methods:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it through an intermediary. It is generally not recommended to burn finished products directly, as controlling the time and area is difficult, and discoloration cannot be reversed.)
>. Authentic cinnabar can draw an orangish-red line on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of the finished product, please draw on an inconspicuous area or use the complimentary bead provided.)
**> Care**
1. Avoid Corrosion:
Cinnabar is a mineral and insoluble in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals like soap and shower gel can cause corrosion.
2. Avoid Contact with Metals:
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible darkening or blackening.
3. Avoid High Temperatures:
The mercuric sulfide in cinnabar only releases at 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as you avoid exposing cinnabar jewelry to high-temperature environments, you can wear it with confidence.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects:
Cinnabar is hard but brittle, so handle with care to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean:
If your cinnabar appears dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original luster! Gently wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry.
6. Oil Polishing Method:
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product. Allow the surface to absorb the oil, which will enhance its clarity and brilliance. After applying oil, if sealing it in a brocade box, you may wrap it with plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the box's lining.
7. Frequent Handling:
Regularly handle cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands. This allows the surface to absorb a thin layer of natural oils, giving it an antique and elegant appearance over time.
The actual product is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
