Its name comes from the Sleeping Beauty Mine in Globe, Arizona, USA. It is said that the mine was named after the fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty" because it resembled the princess when viewed from a distance. Although the mine closed in 2012, meaning no new turquoise is produced, Sleeping Beauty turquoise contains very little iron, resulting in a truly beautiful, pure sky-blue color. Turquoise is a gemstone revered by Native Americans as a stone representing the beautiful sky surrounding the Earth. It was also used in rituals to hear the voice of the gods and in rain dances.
